Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. A I B
November 28, 2011
(Des Moines, Iowa) A twelve point run over the final 2 and half minutes of action, led by AIB's India Shivers, gave the Eagles a 2 point 66-64 victory over the Dordt Defender women's basketball team in non-conference action in Des Moines, Iowa this evening (Monday, November 28).
The AIB Eagles scored the first two baskets of the night and jumped out to an early 12 point lead at 16-4 with 14:26 to play in the first half. A time-out by Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma awakened the Defenders and ignited a 13-2 run to cut the gap to just one point at 18-17 on a pair of Jessica Jelsema free throws with 10:56 to play. Another pair of Jelsema charity tosses knotted the game at 21-21 with 8:09 to play in the half and the Defenders took their first lead on the night with a Jamie Kok layup at 6:16 to go up 25-24 and Elise Maresh made it a 3 point lead (27-24) on a jumper at 5:55.
AIB tied the game at 27-27 and the Defenders trailed 28-27 until Kayla Broekhuis buried a 3 pointer to give Dordt a two point lead and a made free throw by Brianna Spronk gave Dordt another three point margin with 3:29 to play in the half. The lead was quickly erased by a six point run by the home team capped with a Vratny 3 pointer with 2:49 to play. A free throw from Bailey Spencer and a Kayla Gesink basket from behind the arc gave Dordt the lead back (35-34) with a minute to play but AIB scored the last 4 points of the half to take a 3 point (38-35) lead into the break.
Dordt College took a double digit lead at 64-54 on a pair of Jamie Kok free throws but those would turn out to be the last points of the ball game for the Defender women. A pair of McKinsey Nessa free throws for AIB cut the lead to 64-56 and sparked an Eagles comeback.
Over the first 13 minutes of the second half neither team was able to create any breathing room as each team could only manage a 5 point lead. AIB enjoyed the 5 point cushion early with the opening basket of the second half and the Defenders found themselves up 5 (49-44) on a Kara Van Dyke 3 pointer with 14:58 left.
A Megan Howard layup for AIB at 7:08 made it a two point game with the Defenders in front 54-52. Over the next 4 minutes Dordt outscored AIB 10-2 to take a 10 point lead(64-54)on a pair of Jamie Kok free throws with 3:08 to play. Nessa McKinsey's free throws for AIB cut the Dordt advantage to 8 and a trio of layups by India Shivers in a span of 33 seconds cut the lead down to just 2 points with 68 seconds to play and an Ariel Hunter free throw with 43 ticks left on the clock made it a one point game.
A pair of Caitlin Hagarty free throws gave the Eagles a one point lead (65-64) with 20 seconds to go. Dordt called timeout with 9 seconds to go to set up their final play but Danelle Boone's jumper came up short and a final AIB free throw made it 66-64.
Dordt College dominated the boards, holding a 51-29 advantage, including an impressive 20 offensive rebounds. However, the extra possessions were somewhat mitigated by the 38 turnovers the Defenders had on the night. AIB had 25 turnovers in the contest that was described as being very physical.
"AIB battled hard and pressured us well in the end, so you have to give them credit," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "We had some good opportunities at the end that we just didn't finish. We got a little tentative at points in the game and we need to get better at taking care of the basketball, that amount of turnovers is just not acceptable. There was a lot of contact on every play."
Dordt was led in scoring by Jessica Jelsema's 14 points with Kara Van Dyke adding 13 and Brianna Spronk 10. Elise Maresh had a game high 10 rebounds for the Defender women. Kayla Gesink had 4 steals for Dordt and Maresh and Spencer both picked up a pair of blocked shots.
India Shivers led all scorers with 17 points for AIB with McKinsey Nessa adding 16 and Caitlin Hagarty 11 while Ashley Larson dished out a game high of 8 assists.
The Defender women will resume Great Plains Athletic Conference action with a 6:00 pm start at home on Wednesday, November 30 against Dakota Wesleyan.
