Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Doane

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College women's basketball team outscored Doane College by 27 points over the final 30 minutes of action to turn a 15 point deficit into a 12 point win, beating the Tigers 74-62 in GPAC action in Sioux Center this afternoon.
Back to back buckets by Braithwait and Upeniece got the Doane Tigers an early 4-0 lead but a Jamie Kok 3 pointer for Dordt got it back to a one point game. Already up 4-3, Doane outscored the Defenders 18 to 5 over the next 6 minutes to take a 14 point lead at 22-8 on a Savannah Lohmeier 3 pointer with 11:15 left in the half and the Tigers enjoyed their biggest lead of the game up 26-11 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half.
Dordt battled back and a Bailey Spencer jumper at 6:11 cut the Doane lead down to just 7 at 31-24 but Doane was able to push the advantage back to 11 on a Hannah Dostal bucket with under 5 minutes to go at 35-41. Dordt responded by scoring the next 6 points to cut the lead down to 35-30 on a pair of Kayla Gesink free throw with 1:49 to go and the Tigers took a 7 point lead into half-time up 38-31.
After a missed 3 pointer by Doane, Jamie Kok's layup 30 seconds into the second half got Dordt within 5 but Doane answered with a 3 on the next possession to push the lead back to 8 and the Tigers led by 12 at 16:58 on a 3 point basket by Leuttel. From that point on Dordt College would take over the game as they outscored Doane 18-1 over the next seven minutes to take a 5 point lead at 51-46 on a Danelle Boone free throw at 9:55. Doane managed to tie the game at 55-55 on an Ashley Dailey jumper with 6:19 remaining. The Defenders proceeded to go on a 9-0 run to go up 64-55 on an Elish Maresh bucket at 4:57. Doane got within 6 at 66-60 on a Cali Bellar 3 pointer but Dordt scored the next 6 to take a 12 point lead on Jamie Kok layup with 45 seconds remaining and went on to post the 74-62 victory.
After losing their first two games on the road, the Defender women are now a perfect 3-0 at home.
Dordt College had 3 players with double figures in scoring with Jamie Kok and Kara Van Dyke both getting a dozen while Brianna Spronk added ten. A trio of Dordt players pulled down 6 rebounds apiece with Spronk, Kok, and Gesink combining for 18 of Dordt's 37 boards. Jessica Jelsema had a game high 5 assists while Danelle Boone had 5 steals and Jamie Kok blocked 2 shots.
Doane's Cheryl Braithwait lead all scorers with 19 points along with 5 steals and Ashley Dailey added 12 points. Brittany Leuttel grabbed 6 boards to lead the Tigers in that category and Morgan Dubas has 4 assists.
The Defender women made more free throws than Doane took as Dordt went 21-25 (84%) from the stripe while the Tigers were 11 of 18 (61%). Dordt also outrebounded Doane 37 to 29 and both teams gave up the ball with regularity as the Tigers committed 27 turnovers while Dordt lost the ball 30 times, with 19 of those coming in the first half.
The Defender women improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in GPAC play while the Tigers are also 3-2 overall but are 0-1 in conference.

The Defender women will travel to Yankton, SD on Tuesday, November 22nd to take on the Mount Marty Lancers in a GPAC contest scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
