(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College women's basketball team scored the first 5 points of their home opener and never trailed in beating the York College Panthers by a score of 65-51. The Defenders used a solid defensive night to force York into 32 turnovers and the Panthers were held to 28.8% shooting from the floor.

A Jamie Kok 3 pointer gave the Defenders an early 5-0 lead but Dordt could not push the advantage past 5 points over the first 8 minutes of play until a 10 point run sparked by a Danelle Boone 3 pointer and capped by a Jamie Kok jumper gave them a 15 point cushion with 8:46 to play in the first half and Dordt cruised to a 17 point half-time lead at 35-18.

Five minutes in to the second half the Panthers managed to cut the Dordt advantage down to 11 on an Alyssa Becker jumper but 3 straight baskets by the Defenders' Kayla Adamson, Bailey Spencer and Elise Maresh gave Dordt a 19 point lead at 43-24 and York would get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way and cruised to the 24 point win.

"We had a good night defensively," remarked Dordt College Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "we forced a lot of turnovers and made them take a lot of bad shots. Our practice yesterday was very good, we addressed most of the issues that came up last weekend and I was very pleased with how well we played tonight. Kara (Van Dyke) had a good night and we need her to be involved a lot on the offensive end. When she gets the ball a fair bit everyone else gets better looks as well."

Van Dyke led all scorers with 19 points and also pulled down a team high 9 rebounds. Danelle Boone added 9 points on 3 of 6 from 3 point range and Jamie Kok and Bailey Spencer each added 8 points. Spronk pulled down 8 boards and Jessica Jelsema dished out 7 assists.

The Panthers were led in scoring by Alyssa Becker's 14 and Sara Lincoln added 9 with Mayara Santos grabbing a game high 10 caroms.

The Defender women shot 45.8% from the floor, including a 51.9% second half and were 6 of 8 from the charity stripe. York shot just 28.8% from the floor on 15 of 52 attempts and converted 9 of 11 free throws and the Defenders held a slight 36-35 rebound edge.

With the win, Dordt College improves to 1-2 on the year while York falls to 1-3 with all 3 of their losses coming to GPAC schools.

Dordt will next play host to Waldorf College on Friday, November 11 at 6 pm in the DeWitt Gymnasium in a non-conference tilt.
