Dordt College JV Women's Basketball vs. Morningside

January 17, 2011

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Despite a valiant late-game surge, the Dordt Defenders could not get over the hump in JV women’s action Monday, losing to Morningside 72-62.

The Defenders were right with the Mustangs most of the night. An exciting first half saw Dordt get 11 points each from Brittany Kooiker and Bethany Hulst, but the Defenders trailed by 5 at the half thanks to Mustang forward Laura Bruce, who torched Dordt for 16 opening-half points.

While the Defenders had the height advantage, Morningside used their speed and aggressiveness to build a first half lead. They forced 15 turnovers in the opening stanza and used a swift fast-break attack to tally the majority of their buckets.

The single-digit lead became double-digits in the second half when the Mustangs rattled off several transition baskets in succession. However, the late 60-44 deficit did not daunt the Defenders, as they battled back to within four, using some stellar defense to turn it around. Unfortunately, time just right ran out on Dordt as Morningside knocked down their free-throws in the closing seconds to put the game away.

Hulst finished the game with a team-high 19, and Kooiker and Kristin Scholten each pitched in 11 points of their own. The Defenders are still looking for that elusive first conference win; they are 0-6 in the GPAC, 3-8 overall.

The Mustangs were led by Bruce with 24 points, while Meredith Wahl contributed 16 and Lacey Lehmann notched 10.
