Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. AIB
November 17, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Lady Defenders improved to 5-0 on the season with a 71-62 non-conference win over AIB this evening.
AIB held a seven point lead on the Lady Defenders on two occasions in the first half and the Eagles were in front 16-9 with 9:19 remaining in the opening 20 minutes. A jumper by Amber Soodsma knotted the score at 19-19 and Dordt help a 2 point lead at 28-26 until Shelby Wood hit a jumper to beat the halftime buzzer tying the game at 28-28 at half.
Dordt's pressure defense caused numerous turnovers but the Defender women struggled to hit shots in the first half, shooting 26% from the floor.
A lay-up by Dordt's Brianna Spronk tied the game at 32-32 two minutes into the second half and a pair of Julia DeKoekkoek free throws at 17:28 gave Dordt the lead for good. A pair of free throws by Soodsma with 8:47 remaining gave Dordt their biggest lead of the night at 12 with the Defenders up 53-41. The Eagles cut the margin down to 5 at 63-58 with a little more than 4 minutes remaining forcing a Dordt College time-out. A jumper by Soodsma gave Dordt a 7 point cushion at 65-58 and AIB could get no closer than 6 over the closing minutes as the Defenders pulled out in front for the 11 point win.
"Our defensive pressure was good throughout the game and we forced a lot of turnovers (26) but we didn't make the possessions count because we couldn't make the open looks," stated Dordt head coach Craig Stiemsma. "We created a lot of shots but they weren't falling. AIB did a number of good things, they outrebounded us by 9 which shows that they really worked hard through the whole game. Amber had a big night for us, she is just such a great competitor and our younger players can learn a lot from her."
Soodsma finished with a game high 23 points along with 12 rebounds for the double double and also picked up 6 steals. Dordt hoisted up 75 shots in the game, converting 27 for 36% while the Bees were 18 of 58 for 31%.
Caitlin Hagarty led the Eagles with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Brianna Spronk and Julia DeKoekkoek both finished with double digit points for Dordt with 14 and 12 respectively.
Dordt will travel to Mitchell, South Dakota for their first GPAC game of the season on Saturday, November 20 at 2:00 pm against Dakota Wesleyan.
