(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team lost a 75-60 decision to the #2 ranked Northwestern Red Raiders in Great Plains Athletic Conference action in Orange City on Saturday afternoon. The Defenders led early but a surge by Northwestern near the end of the first half and a run at the beginning of the second half stretched the lead out and Dordt could only manage a late run to get the game back to a 15 point difference.
Dordt started quickly and led 19-13 after back to back jump shots by Julia De Koekkoek and Bre Schneidermann, leading by six at the 11:21mark of the half.
From there, Northwestern would go on a 12-0 run, capping the run with a three-point shot by Allison Hulst. Northwestern eventually pushed the lead to ten, only to have Julia De Koekkoek trim the difference to eight on a Julia De Koekkoek bucket but Northwestern had an answer in the form of a Becca Hurley basket to take a ten point lead at halftime 40-30.
Northwestern never led by single digits in the second half, expanding the lead to 69-48 near the midpoint of the second half. Dordt did manage to get the difference down to 13, but didn’t have enough left to make a serious charge in the final minutes, falling 75-60.
Dordt was led by Amber Soodsma’s 18 points while Kara Van Dyke and Julia De Koekkoek each had ten points. Van Dyke had a team high 12 rebounds and blocked two shots and had three assists. Bre Schneidermann had eight points to go with eight rebounds as Dordt outrebounded Northwestern 38-30. Dordt converted 22-53 shots for 41.5 percent success but they were hampered by 26 turnovers.
Northwestern got 21 points from Kendra De Jong and 20 by Becca Hurley. Kami Kuhlmann added 16 for the Raiders and De Jong had a team high 11 rebounds. Northwestern made 30-62 shots for 48 percent.
Dordt slips to 4-7 in conference and 13-8 overall while the #2 ranked Red Raiders improve to a perfect 13-0 in conference and 22-1 overall.
