Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Brewton Parker-Warner Classic

(Lake Wales, Florida) The Dordt women's basketball team won their second game in as many days, defeating Brewton-Parker University 73-66 in game 2 for the Defenders in the Warner University Classic being held in Lake Wales, Florida. With the win Dordt College improves to 9-4 overall while the Barons drop to 3-7.
The first half was played at a wild pace with both teams implementing substantial amounts of full court pressure which partially attributed to the teams combining for 20 first half turnovers, with 13 being committed by the Defender women. The Barons also picked up their 6th team foul less than 4 minutes into the contest. Dordt scored the first 3 points of the contest and held a 4 point lead at 7-3 on a Julia DeKoekkoek layup but could get no separation from the Barons and the two teams found themselves deadlocked 9 times in the first half. Dordt Tied 22-22 a Sharonta Williams free throw for the Barons gave them a one point lead with 4:12 to go in the first half and Brewton Parker took a 3 point lead into the break up 31-28.
Brewton-Parker got on the board first in the second half to take a 5 point lead at 33-28 but back to back buckets by Dordt senior Amber Soodsma followed by a DeKoekkoek steal and Spronk basket gave the lead back to Dordt at 34-33. The two teams were again tied at 36 when Soodsma and VanDyke each tallied for Dordt to give the Defender women a 4 point point cushion at 40-36. Dordt increased the lead to 47-40 with 11:03 to go on a Schneidermann layup to enjoy their biggest lead of the ball game. With the score 48-44 with under 10 minutes to play the Defender women outscored the Barons 12-2 over the next 3 and half minutes to take a 14 point lead at 60-44 with 6:34 to play, 8 of those points coming from the free throw line.
Trailing 62-50 with 4:39 to go Brewton-Parker rattled off 9 straight points on the Dordt women to cut the Defender lead to 3 at 62-59. With just under 3 minutes to play Amber Soodsma nailed a clutch jumper for Dordt to stop the Baron run, giving Dordt a 5 point margin at 64-59. The Barons got it back down to a 3 point lead on a layup by Crystal Nwaopara to make it 64-61 but Dordt responded with 5 straight points capped by another Amber Soodsma basket to make it 69-61 and the Defenders enjoyed a 10 point lead at 73-63 before taking the 73-66 victory.
Dordt's Amber Soodsma finished with a game high 21 points on 9-13 from the floor and 18 of Soodsma's points came in the second half. Soodsma also pulled down a game high 11 rebounds while blocking 6 shots to go along with 2 assists and a steal. Julia DeKoekkoek finished with 14 points with 10 of those coming from the charity stripe while Brianna Spronk added 11 points. Kara VanDyke had 7 rebounds and 3 points and Bre Schneidermann added 3 blocked shots, 3 rebounds and 7 points.
The Barons were lead by Takera Pinkney's 12 points while Sharonta Williams and Crystal Nwaopara each added 10. Jayla Moon lead the Barons with 8 rebounds.
Dordt College was 20-49 from the floor for 40.8% while the Barons threw up a whopping 84 shots converting 25 for 29.8%. The Barons were charged with 35 personal fouls while Dordt committed 21.
"They are an aggressive, physical team," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "and they like to toss the ball to the basket and go hard for the offensive rebounds. We got some good productivity off of our bench and once again had solid senior leadership and Amber (Soodsma) has a great second half offensively." The Barons did secure 19 offensive rebounds and finished with 37 total boards while Dordt pulled in 43.
Next up for the Defender women will be the host of the classic being played in central Florida, the Warner University Royals. Dordt and Warner are scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 pm CST on New Year's Eve, Friday, December 31.
