Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Morningside

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team lost an 80-67 decision to the Morningside Mustangs in action in Sioux City on Saturday afternoon. The Defenders battled back from several double digit deficits to keep the game close but couldn't overcome the #3 ranked Mustangs on their home floor.

Dordt scored the first two points of the game on a Brianna Spronk bucket and never led again. Morningside opened up a 21-13 lead in the first half only to have Amber Soodsma knock down a basket and a pair of free throws to narrow the gap to 21-17. Morningside eventually built the lead to 12 and Dordt made it a ten point game at the intermission.

Morningside continued to expand the lead and were up by 20 with just over seven minutes remaining. Dordt battled to within 15 and made one final charge starting with 4:09 left in the contest. Dordt scored the next nine points with Amber Soodsma getting a basket and two free throws. Bre Schneidermann put in two free throws and Danelle Miedema made a three-point basket. After two points by Morningside Jaimie Kok had a three-point basket rattle out that would have made it a five point game with 1:52 remaining. Instead, Morningside pushed through and won by the eventual 80-67 margin.

Dordt made 20-56 shots from the floor but were just 3-17 on three-point shots. Dordt did make the most of their free throw shooting with a 24-31 day. Morningside was 27-75 from the floor and converted 14-38 three-pointers. Morningside was equally efficient at the free throw line with a 12-13 day. Dordt had a slight 43-42 rebounding edge but had 23 turnover day while Morningside had 16.

Amber Soodsma scored 26 on 9-13 shooting with 6-7 free throws and she had four rebounds with a block and a steal. Julia De Koekkoek added 11 and Bre Schneidermann converted eight with six rebounds. DeKoekkoek also had eight rebounds with two asists. Brianna Spronk scored seven with 11 rebounds and Danelle Miedema scored seven in her first action since hurting her knee a week ago.

Morningside got 26 points from Chelsea Trask and Emily Christen scored 14 with 11 rebounds. Tanaeya Worden added 12 points with a game high six assists.

Dordt will travel to Briar Cliff on Wednesday, December 8.
