(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Lady Defenders dropped an 88-60 decision to the #1 ranked Northwestern Red Raiders in GPAC action this evening in Sioux Center.
Dordt held an early lead of 4-2 but allowed a ten point run that got Northwestern in front 12-4. Northwestern continued to push the lead out, leading 24-10 on a Val Kleinjan three-pointer. Dordt did put together a six point run to trim the lead to 24-16 on a jump shot by Kelly Schouten with 9:02 left in the half. Northwestern threatened to blow the game open with another run and got up 36-20 but Dordt narrowed the gap to 36-26 on a Jaimie Kok three-pointer. Northwestern would eventually take a 43-30 lead into the half.
The Defenders were never able to make a run at the top-ranked Red Raiders in the second half and lost by the final of 88-60, getting outscored 45-30 in the second half.
Dordt struggled against the Northwestern defense getting charged with 33 turnovers. Dordt was 21-42 from the floor and 13-15 on free throws while Northwestern was 33-62 from the field and 11-14 on free throws. The two teams were dead even at 26-26 on rebounds.
Dordt was led by Kok's 16 points while Amber Soodsma added 12. Soodsma also had a team high seven rebounds with two assists and two steals. Brianna Spronk added nine points and six rebounds.
Kami Kuhlmann paced Northwestern with 20 points and Becca Hurley added 18. Kuhlmann had seven assists and Val Kleinjan chipped with 12 points on 4-5 three-point shooting.
Dordt is 1-1 in the league and 7-2 overall while Northwestern is 10-0 and 3-0.The Defenders will face #4 ranked Morningside on Saturday, December 4 in Sioux City, Iowa.
