(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders ran away from the Central (Iowa) Dutch in women’s basketball Saturday afternoon 106-58 at a game hosted by Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa.
Dordt scored the first nine points of the game but were outscored 8-2 as Central cut the lead to 11-8. Dordt regained the momentum and had a 24-16 lead at the midpoint of the first half. Dordt dominated the next ten minutes, outscoring the Dutch 24-4 with Jaimie Kok knocking down 10 during the run and Julia DeKoekkoek made 7-8 free throws.
Central cut the lead to 51-28 but got no closer as Dordt pulled away from the tiring Central team, outscoring the Pella, Iowa school 58-38 in the second half.
Dordt converted 37-63 shots from the floor for 58.7 percent. Dordt made 63 percent of the shots they tried in the second half and converted 24-28 free throws for the game. The Defenders also torched the nets for 8-15 on three-pointers. Central was limited to 18-71 field goals for 25.4 percent and threw up 38 three-point attempts and made ten. Dordt won the rebounding battle 46-28.
Dordt was paced by Brianna Spronk and Julia De Koekkoek with 21 points each. De Koekkoek made 11-12 free throws and Spronk was 9-14 from the floor. Jaimie Kok added 20 points while making 7-13 field goals and was 4-7 on three-point shots. Kara Van Dyke and Amber Soodsma had 18 and 17 points respectively. Van Dyke also grabbed ten rebounds and Soodsma had eight to go with six assists, four blocked shots and two steals. Spronk had nine rebounds and De Koekkoek had seven rebounds.
Central was led by Alyssa Schwartz off the bench with 12 and Jordan Waddell had ten. AJ Baker had a game high 11 rebounds.
Amber Soodsma became the all-time leading scorer in Dordt women’s basketball history with her second field goal on Saturday. She entered the game with 1412 points and passed Lisa Roos’s 1995-1999 total of 1414 early in the game.
Dordt will take a 7-1 record into its game with Northwestern in Sioux Center on Wednesday, December 1.
