Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. William Penn--Northwestern Classic

(Orange City, Iowa) A 12-0 run by the William Penn women’s basketball team turned a three-point halftime deficit into a nine point second half lead and that lead held up the entire second half for a 70-60 win by the Lady Statesmen over the Defenders in non-conference basketball played at Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa.

Dordt led most of the first half, three times by as many as seven but gave up an 8-0 run in late in the half that turned a 19-12 deficit into a 20-19 lead. Dordt scored six of the next eight points and went into the intermission up 25-22 with Amber Soodsma firing for 14 first half points with both teams struggling to get into an offensive flow.

William Penn scored on three of its first four possessions in the second half and took the lead for good on a Rachel Butler pair of free throws with 18:19 left in the game. William Penn built the lead to as many as 12 later in the half with Dordt denting the advantage to five, the last time with under a minute left on a Kara Van Dyke driving lay-up.

Dordt was hindered by 29 turnovers against the Statesmen trapping defense, getting 21 fewer shots from the floor because of the miscues. Dordt held a slight 39-37 rebounding advantage but gave up 15 offensive rebounds. The Defenders were 18-51 from the floor and 19-24 from the free throw line. William Penn was 20-73 from the field and converted 26-32 free throws.

Dordt was led by Amber Soodsma’s 19 points and is three points shy of setting a new career scoring record at Dordt College. Julia De Koekkoek added 11 points and had five rebounds. Kara Van Dyke came off the bench for nine points and seven rebounds and Danelle Miedema had seven points and seven rebounds with two steals before leaving with an injury with under a minute left in the game. Brianna Spronk had eight points, five rebounds and five assists.

William Penn was led by Christa Subbert’s 33 points on 10-20 shooting from the floor and 10-10 free throw shooting. Subbert also had seven rebounds to lead the Statesmen who are 5-3.

Dordt slips to 6-1 and will face Central (Iowa) on Saturday, November 27 at 2:00 in Orange City. Central was a 90-52 loser to Northwestern on Friday night.
