Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team improved to 6-0 with a 69-57 win over Dakota Wesleyan on the road in Mitchell, South Dakota on Saturday, November 20. The Defenders built a big second half lead and then held on at the end, converting free throws for the twelve point win.

Dakota Wesleyan opened the game with a 6-0 lead but the Defenders got back in it and took the lead on a Jaimie Kok lay-up wiht 10:18 left in the half for a 16-15 advantage. Dordt never trailed again and built a 38-28 lead, scoring the final four points of the half on pair of free throws by Amber Soodsma and a basket in the lane by Julia De Koekkoek for a ten point advantage.

The run continued with Dordt scoring nine points in a row at the start of the second half for a 47-28 lead with 17:20 left in the game with Danelle Miedema casting in a pair of free throws. Faced with getting blown out, the Tigers went on a 14 point run to get down 47-42 with 10:43 left in the game. Wesleyan got as close as 57-54 with 3:54 left in the game on a basket by Taylor Piper. The hosts narrowed the gap with a three pointer by Liz Lamb again at the 00:47 mark but the Defenders made six straight free throws and had a Brianna Spronk field goal to make it a final of 69-57.

Dordt converted 24-27 free throws to secure the win while converting 21-64 shots from the field. The Tigers were 23-66 from the floor for 34.8 percent and made 4-9 free throws. The hosts turned the ball over 14 times and Dordt had 11 turnovers. Dordt also held a slight 47-43 rebounding edge.

Dordt was topped by Brianna Spronk with 22 points and she grabbed 14 rebounds. Amber Soodsma also posted a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds and made 11-12 free throws. Julia De Koekkoek had 16 points and made 6-12 shots from the floor and converted 2-4 three-pointers. Soodsma also had two assists and a blocked shot.

Wesleyan was led by Micaela Erickson with 14 points and Brittany Pritchard had 13 points with 13 rebounds before fouling out of the game.

Dordt will be off until Friday, November 26 when they face William Penn at a classic hosted by Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa at 4:00. Dordt also faces Central (Iowa) on Saturday, November 27 at 2:00.
