Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dakota State

(Madison, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team earned its third straight win to start the season with a 63-61 road win over Dakota State in Madison, South Dakota on Tuesday, November 9.

The two teams battled to a 32-32 halftime deadlock with the hosts coming from four down to knot the score right before the half.

Dordt trailed by five with just under five minutes gone in the half. Dordt responded with five straight on a basket by Kara Van Dyke and a three pointer by Jaimie Kok. Dordt eventually built its lead to 55-46 with 7:43 left on a Brianna Spronk offensive rebound and putback. Dordt's lead actually got up to as many as 11 at 57-46 on another Van Dyke basket with 5:17 left. The Defender couldn't put the game away though.

Dakota State proceeded to trim the lead and tied it at 59-59 with 1:13 left in the game. A pair of Bre Schneidermann free throws made it 61-59 but the Lady T's tied it on a pair of free throws. Again it was Schneidermann unlocking the tie with one of two made free throws. Van Dyke stole the ball on the ensuing possession and Danelle Miedema made one of two free throws with Schneidermann grabbing the rebound of the missed shot. Dordt couldn't make the ensuing free throws and Dakota State had one last chance to tie or win it but the shot by Aneshia Starks failed and Dordt moved to 3-0.

Dordt made 24-49 shots but was outrebounded 38-34. Dordt committed 20 turnovers to 18 for the Lady T's. The Defenders made 4-13 three pointers while the hosts made 8-26 and were 15-17 from the free throw line and Dordt converted 10-18.

Dordt was led by Brianna Spronk with 16 points and eight rebounds while Schneidermann had 11 points. Amber Soodsma knocked down 10 points with four assists. Kara Van Dyke had seven points and seven rebounds.

Dakota State got 15 points from Courtney Hamblin with 15 and Kaite Bourk had 12 as Dakota State slipped to 1-1.

Dordt will travel to York (Nebraska) on Saturday, November 13 for a 2:00 game.
