Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College women's basketball team used a stifling second half defense to beat Valley City State on Friday night by a 52-45 margin. Dordt trailed much of the game before holding Valley City scoreless for nearly a ten minute stretch in the second half for the win in its season opener.
Dordt trailed most of the first half and was down 24-21 at halftime. In the second half the took the lead with back to back baskets by Amber Soodsma and Brianna Spronk. Valley City responded by building a five point lead at 33-28 with 15:00 left and were still up 35-31 with 13:10 left after a basket by Amanda Brown.
Dordt's run started with a basket by Jaimie Kok with 12:34 left and the freshman from Randolph, Wisconsin added a three to give Dordt the lead for good with 11:54 to go. Amber Soodsma followed the Kok spree with five straight points and the Defenders eventually built a 45-35 lead with 3:55 to go on another Soodsma basket.
Amanda Brown ended the Valley City dry spell with a basket at the 3:30 mark but the Vikings got no closer than six before falling 52-45.
Amber Soodsma went over 1300 career points with her 17 point outing. She also grabbed six rebounds with Dordt holding a 37-34 rebounding edge. Brianna Spronk had nine points and a game high 11 rebounds and Kok had eight points. Soodsma, Spronk and Julia De Koekkoek had three steals each and Bre Schneidermann had six blocked shots with five rebounds.
Valley City was led by Amanda Brown with 12 points and Mandi Bindas had ten points and eight rebounds.
Dordt is 1-0 and will host Jamestown on Saturday while Valley City State is 1-1 and will travel to Northwestern.
