Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Northwestern

January 30, 2010

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Defenders fell to GPAC rival Northwestern 76-59 this afternoon to fall to 6-7 in conference play and 14-11 overall.

Shooting 16 of 35 in the first half the Red Raiders cruised out to game high lead of 21 points and went in to the half with an 18 point lead over the Dordt Defenders at 41-23.

Dordt was able to cut the Northwestern lead down to 11 at 43-32 with 15:50 to go and the half and got as close as 8 at 46-38 on a Kate Du Mez jumper with 12:56 remaining. The Raiders proceeded to go on an 8 point run to pull ahead by 16 at 54-38 and cruised home for the 76-59 win.

"It was certainly disappointing to go 24-67 from the floor and you aren't going to beat a team as good as Northwestern when you are making about 1 out of every 3 shots you take. I give Northwestern a lost of credit, they shot themselves into a 10 point lead and we just couldn't take control of the game. Our pacing was a little better in the second half and we got it within 8 but they just keep coming after you offensively and pulled away. They just don't have any scoring lulls throughout the game," said Dordt Coach Craig Stiemsma. "Now we have to get over it and start preparing for a very good Briar Cliff team on Wednesday."

Dordt converted 24-67 shots from the floor and 7-9 free throws while Northwestern took advantage of 17-28 shooting from the free throw line and 26-58 field goals. Dordt did hold a 45-37 rebounding advantage but turned the ball over 20 times to 14 for the Red Raiders.

Kate Du Mez converted 16 points with six assists and two steals. Amber Soodsma and McKinzie Schmidt each had ten points with Soodsma getting nine rebounds and Schmidt had six. Bre Schneidermann ended with seven points and six rebounds with four blocks and two steals.

Becca Hurley had 23 points for the Red Raiders and Randa Hulstein had 11 points and 11 rebounds with four assists.
