Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) In spite of a solid effort by the Lady Defenders, Dordt College fell to the #2 ranked Hastings Broncos 75-66 this afternoon in GPAC play. With the loss the Defenders move to 11-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Dordt College took an early lead of 20-16 when Amber Soodsma made a basket with 10:03 left in the first half. The Broncos scored eight points in a row on two three-pointers by Heather McKeon and a lay up by McKeon to make it 24-20. A Dordt timeout couldn't stop the run as the Broncos scored five more in a row to lead 29-20 at the 7:16 mark. Dordt stopped the bleeding with a McKinzie Schmidt basket at the 6:05 mark but Hastings pushed the lead back up to 12 at 41-29. Dordt cut the lead down to eight briefly and trailed by ten at the half 43-33.

Hastings pushed the lead up to 17 with a 15-8 run over the first seven minutes of the second half. Dordt kept the difference in the 13 to 17 point margin and made one more charge. A basket by Schmidt made it 67-54 at the 5:24 mark. Another basket by Schmidt cut it to 67-56 at the 4:44 mark. The run continued with Kate Du Mez scoring a basket at the 3:38 mark and but Lindsay Ducey made two to end the Dordt run at six with 2:43 left. Six points in a row, two by Julia De Koekkoek and four by Schmidt got the lead difference to 69-64 but the Broncos held on to win 75-66.

"I give Hastings a lot of credit," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "they are awfully good. We played as hard as them and outrebounded them and I am very proud of our effort tonight. Our defense was solid and I think that Kate had a great game tonight. She is playing the best basketball of her career here at Dordt College."

Kate Du Mez finished with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. McKinzie Schmidt added 18 points for Dordt along with a team high 10 rebounds and also had 2 assists. Amber Soodsma had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals.

Hastings was led by Lindsay Ducey who had 21 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Heather McKeon was 4-8 from 3 point range and finished with 18 points.

Dordt College will travel to Mount Marty on Wednesday, January 20.
