(Sioux City, Iowa) The Morningside Mustang women's basketball team made it a season split with the Dordt College Defenders on Monday night when they scored a 74-60 win over the visitors at the Rosen Verdorn Sports Complex in Sioux City, Iowa. The hosts never trailed in the second half as Dordt saw their four game winning streak snapped

Dordt led early and were up 9-8 on a McKinzie Schmidt basket with 16:05 left in the first half. The two teams swapped buckets with Amber Soodsma making a shot with 15:04 left for an 11-10 lead but the Mustangs would go on a 17 point run over the next eight minutes with Dordt finally snapping the streak on a Soodsma three-pointer with 6:55 left.

The Defenders fought back to 34-27 with a Briana Spronk bucket with under a minute left in the half. A fast start by the Mustangs in the second half--back to back three pointers by Tanaeya Worden made it 40-27 but Dordt climbed back into the game again, trimming the difference to seven, but getting no closer in dropping the 74-50 final.

Dordt made 20-47 shots but turned the ball over 20 times--16 of them in the first half and limited Morningside to 21-55 shooting but the hosts made 13-28 three-pointers to make up for the low percentage.

"Morningside is a fine team," said Dordt coach Craig Stiemsma. "If they shoot that well on the three point line nobody is going to beat them. We didn't defend the three point line as well as we need to. We did a better job in the second half with our turnovers."

Dordt held a 39-35 rebounding advantage led by McKinzie Schmidt's nine and Bailey Spencer's seven. Amber Soodsma led the Dordt scoring effort with 19 while Kate Du Mez had 12 points, seven assits and two blocked shots. Julia De Koekkoek had nine points and Spronk added seven.

Morningside was paced by Worden's 27 points as she was 7-11 on three-pointers. Chelsie Trask added 12 with four assists.

Dordt is 10-9 overall and 2-5 in the conference while Morningside is now 12-7 overall and 5-3. Dordt will travel to Mitchell, South Dakota on Wednesday, January 13 to face Dakota Wesleyan.
