(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College led start to finish in their non-conference game with York (Nebraska) on Monday night, January 4, in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders scored the first eight points of the game and never led by less than five after that in taking the 66-35 decision.
Kate Du Mez scored the first six points of the game for Dordt with a made three-pointer and three free throws when she was fouled on another long range attempt. A jumper by McKinzie Schmidt capped the game opening run at the 18:15 mark and Dordt pushed ahead by ten points at 18-8. York's highlight was a five point run that followed and got them to within five at the 8:03 mark but Dordt reeled off eight points in a row and ended the half with a 37-22 lead after Du Mez bottomed out a three-point shot in front of the buzzer.
York scored the first points of the second half but then suffered a near eight minute drought, not scoring again until the Panthers were down 49-24 and that lead was never dented as Dordt limited the visitors to 13 points in the second half.
Dordt was paced by Du Mez's season high 24 points and she handed out six assists and got to five steals. McKinzie Schmidt had another double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds and the senior handed off three assists. Julia De Koekkoek had nine points and five rebounds with Bre Schneidermann scoring six points with nine rebounds.
Dordt converted 27-63 shots from the floor for 42.9 percent and they made 8-9 free throws and won the rebounding battle 37-34.
York was 16-48 from the floor for 33 percent and was limited to 2-16 on three-pointers while getting forced into 26 turnovers--13 of them coming by steal for the Defenders. Juliana Bassetto had 14 points with Kristin Wiedemann adding 10 with eight rebounds.
Dordt improves to 9-8 for the season while York goes to 5-11. The Defenders head to Morningside on Wednesday, January 4 and will host Concordia on Saturday, January 9.
