Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff
December 9, 2009
(Sioux City, Iowa) The Lady Defenders fell to Briar Cliff University 85-63 this evening to drop to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC conference. Briar Cliff was ranked number 15 in the most recent NAIA poll and they improve to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in GPAC play.
With the Defenders within 3 points at 49-46 with 9 minutes to go in the second half the Chargers went on an 11-1 run to get a comfortable 13 point lead on Dordt at 60-47 and cruised to the victory down the stretch with Briar Cliff scoring 37 points in the last 10 minutes of the contest.
Dordt's top two scorers, Amber Soodsma and Kate DuMez, were both in foul trouble for most of the contest and each eventually fouled out of the ball game. The Defenders had a rough night from behind the arc going 1 for 14 from 3 point range.
"I give Briar Cliff a lot of credit," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "the game was close for 31 to 32 minutes but we did not have a great effort over the last little bit. We did a lot of little things right but they wore us down somewhat. We were able to control the tempo a lot but not enough and we did not get enough stops. Julia had an excellent night with 16 points and she has really been coming around offensively and has her best basketball ahead of her."
Dordt had 13 steals and 24 turnovers while the Chargers stole the ball 17 times and coughed it up 22. The Chargers outrebounded Dordt by a 44-38 margin.
