(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt women fell to the #1 ranked Northwestern Raiders this evening by a score of 66-55 to fall to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC.
The Dordt Defenders played the Raiders tight for the entire evening and the first half featured 8 lead changes and 3 ties with neither team extending any kind of scoring margin. Dordt had two 4 point leads with the first coming with 11:54 to go in the half on a Julia DeKoekkoek three ball and the second with 8:35 remaining in the half on an Amber Soodsma lay-up. The teams were knotted at 16-16,18-18 and 20-20 until a Soodsma made free throw would give Dordt their last lead of the contest at 21-20 with 2:10 to go in the half. A Becca Hurley lay-up, a jumper by Kendra De Jong and a De Jong free throw gave the Raiders the last 5 points of the half and a 25-21 lead at the break.
Kendra De Jong scored the last 3 points of the first half and also had the first 3 points of the second in extending the Northwestern lead to 28-21 just 10 seconds into the half. The Raiders pushed the lead to 12 points on a Kleinjan 3 pointer at 12:23 but Dordt stayed competitive and whittled away at the lead and a pair of Soodsma free throws at 5:46 cut the lead down to just 4 with Dordt trailing 51-47. With the lead back to 6 a Soodsma jumper once again put the NW lead at 4 with 4:42 to go and the score 53-49. The Raiders responded with 8 straight points on back to back buckets by Kendra De Jong, a jumper by Kuhlmann and another by Neth to push the margin to 12 with 1:46 to go and Dordt got no closer than 9 down the stretch.
Shooting woes from the free throw line were a significant factor in the loss as Dordt shot 12-25 from the charity stripe for 48%. The Raiders were 17-20 for 85% on free throws.
Amber Soodsma led the Defenders in scoring with 19 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 3 assists, Julia DeKoekkoek added 14 points and 2 rebounds. Bre Schneidermann had a team high 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
Kate DuMez's 4 assists on the night ties her with Linda Mabie on top of the all-time assist category.
Northwestern's Kendra De Jong led all scorers with 21 points. The Raiders held a narrow 43-38 rebounding margin on the Defenders and Dordt turned the ball over one less time than Northwestern at 16-15 and Dordt had 9 steals to Northwestern's 6.
