(Omaha, Nebraska) The Defender women cruised to an 82-59 win in Omaha over the College of St. Mary this evening to improve to 4-5 on the season.
The Defender women had little trouble dispensing of the Flames tonight and led almost the entire contest. The Flames had closed to within 9 points at 36-27 near the end of the half but a McKinzie Schmidt 3 point basket and 3 straight Kate Du Mez free throws pushed the lead to 42-27 going into half.
Dordt opened the half with 9 straight to extend the lead to 51-27 and never led by less than 18 points for the duration of the non-conference tilt.
After having a short break for Thanksgiving it was "rest prevailing over rust" said Coach Stiemsma after the game. "I thought that we played really well tonight, especially defending the three point basket.(Dordt's defense held College of St. Mary to just 2-21 shooting in spite of the fact that the Flames entered the night averaging 10 of 25 from behind the arc.) I think that was the best that we passed the basketball so far this season. We did a nice job taking it to them on the inside and really did well on the boards. We now have a great challenge to get ready for on Wednesday as we play Northwestern (now ranked #1 in the NAIA)".
Amber Soodsma and McKinzie Schmidt both had double doubles with Soodsma scoring 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds while Scmidt added 15 points while pulling down 11 boards. Kate Du Mez had 12 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocked shot.
The Defenders will next play #1 ranked Northwestern at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, December 2 in Orange City, Iowa.
