Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Kansas Wesleyan

(Fremont, Nebraska) For the third time this week the Dordt College women's basketball team suffered a single digit loss to a non-conference opponent. The Defenders lost a one point decision to Kansas Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in the Midland Lutheran Godfather's Pizza Classic by a 60-59 count. The Defenders slipped to 1-4 with the loss while Kansas Wesleyan improved to 2-2 after losing to the host school on Friday night.

Dordt led early and built a 20-12 lead on a basket by Julia DeKoekkoek with 7:14 left in the half. Kansas Wesleyan cut into the lead and outscored Dordt 10-2 over the next four minutes and tied the game with a Chelsea Freed basket with 3:00 left in the half. A Kate Du Mez three-pointer was the only bucket for either team over the final three minutes of the half and gave the Defenders a 25-22 lead at halftime.

Dordt started quickly in the second half and took a nine point lead on a three-pointer by DeKoekkoek with 17:16 left in the game. The Defenders couldn't maintain the lead as the Coyotes stormed back and took a lead of 36-35 just over three minutes later. Neither team was able to get much of a lead the rest of the way with Dordt tying the contest at 50 on an Amber Soodsma basket with 3:54 left. Soodsma tied it again at 52 with 2:04 left and a DeKoekkoek basket knotted it at 54 with 1:36 remaining in the game. The Defenders were unable to take the lead thought with Wesleyan extending the lead to 57-54 on a Freed three pointer at the 1:25 mark.

Dordt answered the three pointer with a McKinzie Schmidt field goal at the 00:51 mark but the Coyotes answered the challenge with a three-pointer by Shelby Babcock with the shot clock winding down to take four point lead at the 00:17 mark. An Amber Soodsma three pointer cut the margin to one near the end of the game but Dordt wouldn't get another shot in falling 60-59.

Dordt was 23-56 from the field and 8-21 on three-pointers. Amber Soodsma scored 23 points on 8-16 shooting and cashed in on 6-10 three-point field goals. She also corralled 10 rebounds and was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the two day event. De Koekkoek scored 15 and grabbed four rebounds with three assists. McKinzie Schmidt recorded a double-double with ten points and 12 rebounds. Bre Schneidermann scored six with six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.

Dordt outrebounded the Coyotes 43-30 but committed 20 turnovers while forcing 11. Wesleyan was led in scoring by Montric Santee and Shelby Babcock with 14 and 11 points each.

Dordt will host Dakota State on Tuesday night, November 17 at 6:00.
