Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Valley City State

(Valley City, North Dakota) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team needed a dramatic comeback to beat the Valley City State Vikings on the road Friday night. Dordt had an early lead at 5-2 and then didn't lead again until the final ten seconds to cling to the season opening win.
Dordt trailed 29-25 at halftime and got down by as many as 48-36 with about six minutes remaining in the ball game. Dordt made three foul shots on one possession to cut the lead to single digits and then kept the run going by getting all the way to within 48-47. Valley City extended the lead to 50-47 but Dordt answered and trailed 50-49.
Valley City State had the ball with less than thirty seconds left in the game and worked the ball to Andrea Hummel who was fouled. She missed the two free throws and Dordt took the ball down the floor and Amber Soodsma got the ball to the middle of the lane and made a pull up jumper from ten feet with under :10 left. The hosts called a time out passed midcourt and had :03.5 to work with. The ball was deflected on the inbounds pass and Dordt stole with Julia De Koekkoek hanging on as the time expired.
Amber Soodsma led Dordt with 16 and McKinzie Schmidt had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Soodsma snared eight rebounds and had two assists with Bre Schneidermann getting ten points with seven rebounds. Valley City State was topped by Abby Rittenhouse's 15 points.
