Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team won a 68-51 decision over the Briar Cliff Chargers in GPAC action on Wednesday night in Sioux Center to improve their conference record to 7-10 for the conference season and gave them the edge in the chase for the final home court game in the GPAC playoffs next Tuesday night.

Dordt led 24-10 with 9:19 left in the half but lost Kate Du Mez to her third foul at the seven minute mark. Dordt surrendered 16 points in a row seven minutes of the game and trailed 26-24 with 2:14 left when Christa Stewart made a jump shot. Dordt tied the game on a pair of Amber Soodsma free throws at the 1:39 mark and tied it again with under a minute left when McKinzie Schmidt bottomed out two free throws for a 28-28 halftime tie.

Dordt jumped out to a nine point lead in the second half with Schmidt repeatedly knocking down baseline jumpers and Dordt was up 44-35 with 15:09 left in the game. Two straight three-pointers by Briar Cliff's Samantha Pearson closed the gap and Dordt trailed minutes later when Megan Salcedo made two free throws at the midpoint of the second half.

Dordt re-took the lead with 8:59 left on Kate Du Mez free throws and Dordt never trailed again. The Defenders went on a seven point run to go from up 50-47 to up 57-47 and they rolled on for the win.

The Defenders limited Briar Cliff to 17-63 shooting from the floor and 3-17 three point shooting while making 24-51 shots themselves and 5-7 three-pointers. Dordt converted 15-25 free throws and Briar Cliff made 14-18. Dordt won the rebounding battle 49-32 but turned it over 21 times.

"We won this with hard work and defense," said Dordt coach Craig Stiemsma. "Nobody worked harder than us this week. We got the ball at the lane and to the baseline well and when we did that we had success on offense.

Amber Soodsma had 19 points and nine rebounds with two assists and two steals. McKinzie Schmidt had a double double with 18 points and ten rebounds. Kelsie De Nooy scored 14 and had nine rebounds while Kate Du Mez had 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists with four steals.

Liz Grider scored 19 and had five rebounds while Salcedo and Stewart each had 10 points.

Dord tis 12-15 overall and 7-10 in the league while Briar Cliff is 13-16 overall and 6-11 in the conference. Dordt will host top-ranked and unbeaten Morningside in their regular season finale.
