Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. York
January 8, 2009
(York, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team claimed an 81-47 win over the York Panthers in non-conference basketball play Thursday, January 8 in York, Nebraska.
The Defenders scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in building a 38-20 halftime lead. The six initial points were scored on back to back three-pointers by Amber Soodsma. The Defenders controlled the game despite committing 16 first half turnovers and got out-rebounded 18-16 at halftime.
Dordt opened the second half with a 10-0 run and breezed in for the final 34 point win, making 55 percent of their shots and swinging the rebounding advantage around to their favor against the shorthanded York team. The Panthers had just seven players in uniform for the non-conference test.
"We talked about rebounding at halftime and knew that they would have a hard time sticking with us on the boards because they didn't have many players," said Dordt coach Craig Stiemsma.
Amber Soodsma made all five three-pointers she tried on the way to a game high 19 points.
"Amber made about five shots in a row in the span of two or three minutes in the second half," said Stiemsma. "She was limited in the first half because of three fouls--I think she only played six or seven minutes. She just went off."
Kate Du Mez had 13 points and nine assists with five steals while Kelsie De Nooy, McKinzie Schmidt and Bailey Spencer all had eight with Schmidt getting a game high ten rebounds. Julia De Koekkoek came off the bench for nine points.
"Julia brought energy off the bench," said Stiemsma. "When she concentrates on her defense and is active good things happen."
Dordt converted 30-55 shots and was 7-12 on three-pointers and ended the game with 24 turnovers while improving to 7-9 for the season.
York made 18-49 shots and was led by Kristin Wiedemann's 18 points with seven rebounds and Megan Thomas had 16 points. The loss was York's 18th in as many starts.
Dordt will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, January 10 to face Nebraska Wesleyan at 2:00.
