Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

January 3, 2009

(Yankton, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defenders had their only win streak of the season snapped at three today with a 70-45 loss to the Mount Marty Lancers. The loss drops the Defenders to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in GPAC play.

Although the second half of the trip to Yankton was pretty good going, after a slick first half of travel, the second half of their basketball game was not. Down only 6 points at half-time the Defenders struggled offensively in the second half and were outscored by 19 points in the second half of the contest, shooting 4-23 for 17%

The Defenders shot 25% on the afternoon from the floor, including going 0-6 from the 3 point line. The Defenders also committed 19 turnovers to the Lancers 12 while outrebounding the Lancers 46-40.

"We didn't shoot the ball well the entire game but played pretty good defensively in the first half," said Coach Stiemsma in a post-game interview. "They did a nice job with their dribble penetration and we just couldn't deter them one little bit, they certainly earned the win. I felt like our effort was good but we need to regroup heading into our game against York on Thursday and then back into conference play on Saturday against Nebraska Wesleyan."

Amber Soodsma led the Dordt women with 14 points on four 2 point field goals and 6 free throws while Kelsie DeNooy dished in 9. McKinzie Schmidt and Julia DeKoekkoek added 5 points apiece and Bre Schneiderman had 5 blocks for Dordt while Kate DuMez finished with 3 assists.

Michelle Amundson paced the Lancers with a game high 17 points and 7 rebounds.
