(Orange City, Iowa) After going more than two weeks without a game, it took a while for the Dordt women's basketball team to get going against Northwestern of Minnesota tonight and the Dordt lead was only 6-5 after 5 minutes of play. Dordt then scored 13 straight and never looked back as they easily defeated the Eagles 61-38 in their first game of the Pizza Ranch Classic held at Northwestern (IA). The win improves Dordt's record to 5-8 overall.
Dordt's lead was 33-16 at half-time and the women led by as many as 28 points in the second half. Dordt's size proved to be too much for the Northwestern Eagles to handle as Bre Schneidermann blocked 3 shots and had a game high 9 rebounds in the contest and the Eagles had few easy looks all night. Dordt's defense contributed greatly to holding Northwestern to 25% shooting and Dordt also had a huge margin in points off turnovers as the Defenders scored 26 points off 30 turnovers to only 3 points off turnovers for Northwestern.
Dordt was led in scoring by junior guard, Kate DuMez, who finished the evening with 16 points to go with her 6 assists and 1 steal. "I was happy with how Kate played tonight, she passed the ball very well for us", said Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "I felt like we gave a very good effort defensively in the first half and as the season progresses I think we will continue to get better offensively. We did a nice job in the second half getting Amber (Soodsma) open for some good jumpers. It was really nice to get everyone into the game and I felt like all of our players did really positive things for us when they were out on the floor." Soodsma finished the game with 14 points, shooting 50% (7-14)from the floor, Soodsma also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a block and a steal for the game.
The Northwestern Eagles top scorer was Kaelee Kendrick, who finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 1 blocked shot.
The Dordt women will play again tomorrow, Wednesday, December 31 when they go against Trinity Christian (Illinois) at Northwestern at 2:00 pm in their second game of the Pizza Ranch Classic. Trinity Christian fell to Northwestern (IA) in their game today by a score of 87-45.
