Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

December 3, 2008

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt women's basketball team lost it's second straight GPAC game, falling to Dakota Wesleyan 75-59 at home this evening. The loss gives the Defenders an 0-2 start in conference play and drops them to 2-7 overall.

Dordt trailed by only a 5-4 margin at the 17:20 mark but then went over 5 minutes without a made basket and with just under 8 minutes gone in the first half found themselves trailing 18-4 until a Bre Schneidermann basket stopped the Tigers 13 point run.

Kate DuMez was forced to spend the last 8 minutes and 45 seconds of the first half on the bench when she picked up her third personal foul. With Amber Soodsma sidelined with an ankle sprain the point guard duties fell to Noelle Kreykes who had a solid night scoring 16 points and picking up 2 steals in 34 minutes of playing time.

Although the Defenders trailed 36-21 at half-time they cut the lead to 6 points at the 10:11 mark of the second half when Kelsie DeNooy stole the ball and went in for the lay-up to bring the score to 47-41. Unfortunately,DeNooy went down with a mild ankle sprain on the play and before she could get back on the floor the Tigers pushed their lead back to 12 in the next 2 minutes. From that point on Dordt would get no closer than 9 when Noelle Kreykes hit a 3 pointer at the 4:10 mark.

DWU made 25 of 33 free throws compared to only 9 of 18 attempts for the Defenders. Kelsie DeNooy scored 16 points on the evening to go along with 7 rebounds.

The Defenders had a slight 36-34 edge in rebounding but turned the ball over 23 times to the Tigers 17.

After the game Coach Stiemsa stated that: "Their quickness really hurt us early on and we committed a lot of early fouls. We had a lack of offensive continuity throughout the game and we got down early in which forced us to have to try to battle back all night. We really need to limit our opponents to under 30 points per half and we didn't tonight. Kelsie (DeNooy) had a great game with lots of hustle plays and showed good senior leadership."

The Defenders will host Dana this Saturday, December 6, beginning at 2:00 pm. Dordt will then travel to Sioux Falls to battle the Cougars on December 10 with the tip-off schedules for 6:00 pm.
