(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team lost an 86-73 decision on the road to open the Great Plains Athletic Conference season on Tuesday night, November 25.
The Defenders led early with a 19-12 advantage at the 14:30 mark of the first half on a basket by Bailey Spencer. Northwestern proceeded to score the next 13 points over the ensuing six minutes for a 25-19 lead. Dordt finally broke the run with a three point shot by Kate Du Mez to trim the lead to three. Another basket by Spencer cut the Northwestern advantage to 25-24 but Northwestern closed the half with a 16-7 run to go into the intermission up 41-31.
Northwestern went up by 18 points early in the second half and held the Defenders off the entire second half with Dordt getting the game down to an 86-73 final with a 14-4 run to close the game.
Dordt's Kate Du Mez scored a game high 22 points in her first game since rejoining the team after the soccer season. Du Mez also handed out two assist and had four steals. Amber Soodsma dumped in 17 and McKinzie Schmidt had 12 points and game high 17 rebounds. Dordt made 26-77 shots for 33.8 percent and was 16-24 on free throws. Dordt had a narrow 41-37 rebounding edge and Soodsma had eight caroms to go along with her 17 points.
Northwestern was 33-70 from the floor for 47.1 percent and 9-20 on three-pointers. Kami Kuhlman led four players in double figures with 17 and Becca Hurley had 16 with seven rebounds. Val Kleinjahn had four assists to lead Northwestern. 19 of Northwestern's 33 baskets were assisted.
Dordt is 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference while Northwestern is 5-4 and 1-0.
Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, December 3 at 6:00 in their next outing.
