(Forest City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team lost an 80-62 decision to the Waldorf Warriors in non-conference basketball on Friday night, November 21 in Forest City, Iowa. The Defenders trailed by six at halftime and got no closer than three in the second half in dropping their fifth decision of the season.
Dordt led briefly in the first half when Bailey Spencer made it 25-23 with a shot with just over six minutes left to halftime. Waldorf came back to tie it at 25 and proceeded to score seven points in a row for a 30-25 lead. The Defenders cut the lead down to 32-28 with 1:33 left but went into the half down 36-30 and had McKinzie Schmidt with three fouls and Lesley Eldredge and Amber Soodsma each had two.
Dordt made a run early in the second half and were down 41-39 with 16:28 left in the game with Schmidt making a short jump shot to cut the deficit down. The two point difference was as close as Dordt would get with Waldorf scoring the next eight points over the ensuing minute and a half and were never seriously challenged the rest of the way. A Schmidt free throw made it 57-50 with 8:31 left but the hosts had an eight point answer to put the game out of reach.
Dordt was led in scoring by Amber Soodsma's 21 points on 9-21 shooting. Soodsma also had seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Julia DeKoekkoek and McKinzie Schmidt both had 12 points with DeKoekkoek getting to eight rebounds and Schmidt seven. Bailey Spencer chipped in with seven points and Brittany den Hoed had five rebounds.
Dordt was 27-62 from the floor for 43.5 percent and was outrebounded 51-36. Dordt committed 20 turnovers in their final tuneup before the conference opener against Northwestern on Tuesday, November 25.
Waldorf converted 31-77 shots and was led by Megan Forster with 22 points and Kate Milbrandt had 18 points. Rachel Hannam had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Waldorf is 2-6 this season and Dordt is now 2-5.
