Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dakota State

(Madison, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team earned their second win of the 2008-2009 season with a 59-52 win on the road against longtime rival Dakota State on Saturday night, November 15 in Madison, South Dakota. The Defenders had to overcome a late eight point deficit to win the non-conference game.
Dordt led in the first half from the 8:25 mark on, going on a 8-1 run to turn a six point disadvantage at the 12:51 mark into a 18-17 lead on a Julia De Koekkoek field goal. Dordt proceeded to build the lead to 24-17 with 5:49 left in the half on a Bailey Spencer field goal and the Defenders were up 27-25 at halftime.
The hosts regrouped at halftime and went on an eight point run to start the second half and led 33-27 with 17:34 left in the game. Dordt fought back to tie it at 36 on a De Koekkoek field goal with 10:40 left but the Trojans had an answer as they outscored the Defenders 9-2 for a 45-38 lead at the 8:20 mark. From there it was all Dordt as they battled back to tie the game and take the lead on free throws by Amber Soodsma with 2:32 left. The Defenders would never trail again and scored teh last six points of the game on free throws for the 59-52 win.
Dordt converted 19-55 field goals and were 20-26 on free throws including De Koekkoeks's 9-10 and Soodsma's 7-8. Dakota State was limited to 18-66 shooting and made just 4-28 three pointers. Dordt outrebounded the Trojans by a 48-40 margin. Dordt committed 22 turnovers to 18 for the hosts.
Soodsma led Dordt with 22 points and she grabbed ten rebounds with four assists and two blocked shots. De Koekkoek had 17 points and six rebounds and McKinzie Schmidt converted eight points and had 17 rebounds to lead all players. Bailey Spencer had six points and four rebounds for the Defenders and Lesley Eldridge had four points and four rebounds.
Dakota State got 16 points from Megan Swecker and 13 points from Tricia Boldt.
Dordt is 2-4 this season while Dakota State is 1-5 and has lost five games in a row. Dordt will travel to Forest City to face Waldorf on Friday, November 21 at 7:00.
