Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Grand View

(Des Moines, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team lost a 64-58 decision at Grand View in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday night, November 12 in non-conference basketball play. The Defenders couldn't maintain a seven point halftime lead in dropping their fourth game against one win.
Dordt got out quickly, building their lead to 18-7 on a McKinzie Schmidt basket with 8:58 left in the first half. Grand View outscored the Defenders over the next 5:10 by a 14-4 margin to trim the lead to 22-21. Dordt recovered to regain a ten point lead with a nine point run of their own, capping the run with a three-point play by Schmidt with 1:50 left in the half and took a 31-24 lead into the locker room.
Grand View evened the score with a 13-6 run to start the second half and took the lead for the first time at 39-37 with 14:18 left in the game. Dordt seemed to weather the storm and pushed their lead to 52-46 with 6:52 left on an Amber Soodsma three-pointer. The see-saw battled continued with the teams battling to a 56-56 tie with 2:29 left in the game. The hosts were up 59-56 when Soodsma hit a two-point basket with 1:20 left to make it 59-58. Dordt then forced a turnover but a Julia De Koekkoek three-pointer wouldn't go and the Defendes were eventually forced to fould and Grand View preserved the 64-58 win.
Dordt was led by Soodsma's 17 points on 7-16 shooting. De Koekkoek added 14 and Schmidt had 13 points with nine rebounds. Bailey Spencer added eight points and eight rebounds. Soodsma and Lesley Eldridge were both credited with five assists and De Koekkoek had three steals.
Dordt made 23-54 shots for 43 percent while turning the ball over 22 times. Grand View held a 36-32 rebounding advantage.
The Vikings were led by Jamie Sickles with 17 points and Jodi Nikkel had 16 points with a game high 11 rebounds. Natalie Lang added 12 points for the Vikings who converted 22-47 shots and 16-30 free throws. Dordt made it to the free throw line 14 times with eight converted.
Dordt is 1-4 while Grand View improves to 2-1.
Dordt travels to Madison, South Dakota on Saturday, November 15 for a 7:30 tipoff against Dakota State.
