Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team earned their first win of the 2008 season with a narrow 54-52 win over Valley City State (North Dakota) in a non-conference basketball game in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders got a late bucket from McKinzie Schmidt and held on for the win on the final possession to improve to 1-2 for the season.

Dordt trailed early but both teams struggled to find the basket with Dordt taking their first lead at the 6:32 mark of the first half on a pair of free throws by Schmidt to push the Defenders in front 12-10. Valley City State went from the 13:37 mark to the 5:18 mark of the first half as Dordt took a 21-14 lead into the half when Schmidt made a buzzer beater to end the initial 20 minutes of play.

Valley City State cut the lead down immediately in the second half and took a brief lead at 39-38 with 8:10 remaining in the game. A Julia De Koekkoek three-pointer with 7:05 left gave Dordt a lead they wouldn't give up at the 7:39 mark. De Koekkoek's basket triggered Dordt to a five point lead at the 3:20 mark when she made a free throw for a 52-47 lead. Valley City responded with five unanswered points to tie it at 52 with 2:00 left. A pair of turnovers in the final minute allowed Dordt possession with :28 left. The Defenders ran the clock down and Schmidt got free for a straight 17-footer that the junior drained for the 54-52 lead with :10 left. A Valley City timeout came with :06 left and the visitors got the ball up the floor but turned teh ball over in the lane, allowing Dordt to preserve the win.

Dordt made 22-65 shots while limiting Valley City State to 19-57 shooting. Dordt had 17 turnovers while Valley City State had 22 and Dordt held a rebounding advantage of 46-41.

Schmidt shared game honors in scoring with 21 points on 9-18 shooting and 3-4 free throws and she ripped down 11 rebounds. De Koekkoek had 12 points--all in the second half and grabbed seven rebounds and Amber Soodsma had seven points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Schmidt also had two assists and three steals in 35 minutes of play.

Valley City State was led by Abby Rittenhouse with 21 points and eight rebounds while Caitlyn Wojahn had eight points.

Dordt is 1-2 and Valley City State drops to 1-1. Dordt faces Jamestown Saturday, November 8 at 2:00 while Valley City State plays Northwestern in Orange City.
