Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff-GPAC Tournament First Round

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team took a Great Plains Athletic Conference first round tournament game win over the Briar Cliff Chargers on Tuesday night in Sioux Center. The Defenders trailed early but took control of the game late in the first half for a 69-58 final.
Dordt started slowly and were down 14-8 with 12:15 left in the half after the Chargers' Amber Estochen hit a basket. Dordt went on a 11-1 run to take the lead with McKinzie Schmidt, Bre Schneidermann, Julia De Koekkoek, Kate Du Mez and Amber Soodsma all scoring in the run for a 19-15 lead with 7:28 left in the first half. Briar Cliff had back to back baskets to tie the game but the Defenders recovered to score the next seven points and led by as many as ten before going into half up 34-26.
The Chargers put together one serious charge at the Defenders when Kendra Collins made back to back three pointers to make the score 44-39 with 8:41 left. The Defenders then reeled off the next seve points to re-establish the double digit lead as Amber Soodsma hit a pair of jumpers around a three point play by Schneidermann. Dordt never led by less than ten the rest of the game in winning their 12th game of the season and their third of the year over the Chargers.
Dordt was 23-47 from the floor for 48.9 percent and converted 21-22 free throws. Briar Cliff was 18-53 for 34 percent and made 7-23 three-pointers. The Defenders won the rebounding battle with a 38-24 advantage but turned the ball over 20 times to 16 for the Chargers.
Dordt was led by Soodsma's 19 points while Schneidermann converted 13 and Schmidt 12--ten of them in the first half. Kate Du Mez had 10 points while Schmidt led team with nine rebounds. Soodsma also got to eight rebounds while Kelsie De Nooy got to five and Du Mez had a team high four assists.
Briar Cliff was paced by Jamee Phipps with 11 and Tana Colt had 10.
Dordt is 12-16 overall while Briar Cliff ends their year at 11-20. Dordt will travel to Morningside on Thursday, February 28 when they face the GPAC champion Mustangs.
