Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders didn't let Hastings out of their sights on Saturday but couldn't put a charge together against the #6 ranked team in the country as the Defenders dropped a 69-51 decision to the 23-4 club from Hastings.

Dordt held brief leads in the first half, the last one at 6-5 with 16:59 left in the half on a Kelsie De Nooy basket. Hastings pushed the lead to 22-11 on a Rachael Van Kirk three-pointer with 10:43 left but the Defenders pieced together a 6-0 run to make it 22-17 with McKinzie Schmidt capping the run with a jumper at 7:54 remaining. Hastings again pulled away to a 34-21 lead with 4:28 leftbut the Defenders brought it back to a manageable 34-28 margin near the end of the first half on a Kate Du Mez basket and the Broncos went into the locker room up 36-28.

The Defenders suffered a drought early in the second half, getting behind 53-36 near the midpoint of the second half and were never able to get close again, losing by the 69-51 final.

Dordt was 21-68 from the floor and made just 7-17 free throws. Hastings was 22-59 from the floor and 18-24 on free throws. The Defenders owned a 50-41 rebounding advantage but committed 24 turnovers.

Dordt's Amber Soodsma scored 14 and Kelsie De Nooy had 12 points and ten rebounds. Bre Schneidermann scored nine and Schmidt had eight oints and eight rebounds while Kara Karlsgodt had nine rebounds. De Nooy also had foru steals and Schneidermann had three blocked shots with Du Mez dishing off two assists and Karlsgodt four.

Hastings was led by Lindsey Ducey with 21 and Kay Broekemeier had 17 with Heather McKeon getting 11 rebounds.

Dordt will face Mount Marty on Wednesday, February 13 in Yankton, South Dakota in their next game.
