Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team earned their ninth win of the season with a 69-54 homecourt win over Briar Cliff in Sioux Center on Saturday.

The Defenders trailed twice, once at 7-5 and again at 8-7 but recovered and took the lead for good on a Kara Karlsgodt basket with 15:40 left in the half. Dordt pushed the lead to 38-22 on a free throw by McKinzie Schmidt but the Chargers scored the final eight points of the half, cutting the lead in half.

Dordt was able to maintain a double digit lead most of the second half with Briar Cliff getting to within nine at 56-47 before Amber Soodsma hit a three-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer for a 12 margin and the Defenders were never seriously challenged again in taking the 15 point win.

Dordt was 27-56 from the floor and 3-5 on three-pointers while Briar Cliff was 21-60 from the deck and 5-21 on three's. Dordt held a whopping 49-30 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over just 17 times against constant Briar Cliff pressure.

Kate Du Mez and McKinzie Schmidt each had 15 and Amber Soodsma and Kara Karlsgodt both put in 12 with Kelsie De Nooy knocking down nine. Schmidt led teh team with 17 rebounds and Du Mez had a game high nine assists and six steals.

Briar Cliff was led by Cat Nelson with 14 points while Kayla Boyd added 13 and Jamee Phipps tossed in 11 with six rebounds.

Dordt is now 9-13 overall and 4-9 in the league while Briar Cliff is 10-15 overall and 4-9 in the GPAC. Dordt will play nationally ranked Hastings in their next outing on Saturday, February 9 at 2:00.
