(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team lost an 80-60 decision at the hands of the #3 ranked Morningside Mustangs on Wednesday night in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders never led in the game, but kept it close in the first half, trailing by one 16-15 with 13:24 left in the half on a Betsy Van't Hul layup. Dordt would keep it at one with a basket by Kara Karlsgodt at the 10:49 mark but Morningside held Dordt without a point for nearly six minutes, building a 26-17 lead before the Defenders got on the board on a McKinzie Schmidt jumper with 4:54 left. The Defenders went into half down 34-24.
Karlsgodt opened the scoring in the second half to cut the lead to eight but the Defenders got no closer as Morningside went on a run to go up 50-29 and were never challenged the rest of the game.
Dordt was led by Kelsie De Nooy with 17 points and five rebounds while McKinzie Schmidt added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Kate Du Mez scored nine and had four assists and four steals before fouling out. Dordt made 23-67 shots for 34.3 percent and Morningside made 27-58 for 46.6 percent and converted 7-12 three-pointers in the second half.
Dordt outrebounded the Mustangs 40-39 and Dordt committed 18 turnovers to 20 turnovers for the Mustangs.
Morningside was led by Autumn Bartel with 14 points while Dani Gass had 13 and JJ Hall 11. Gass also had eith rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and two steals.
Dordt is now 7-12 overall and 2-8 in the conference while Morningside stays perfect in the league with a 10-0 mark and are 20-2 overall. Morningside hasn't lost since mid-November.
