(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team turned in a dominating defensive performance on the way to a 72-39 win over Nebraska Wesleyan in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball at Sioux Center, Iowa on Saturday afternoon.
The Defenders trailed 13-10 at the 12:58 mark before starting a spurt that pushed them in front by double digits at halftime 41-27. The Defenders outscored Wesleyan 20-5 at one point on the way to the comfortable margin.
Dordt scored the first six points of the second half on back to back baskets by Kate Du Mez followed by a Bre Schneidermann lay-up and the Wolves never cut the lead down past 18 as the Defenders breezed to the win. Wesleyan was limited to seven points in the final ten minutes of play.
Dordt was led by Kelsie De Nooy's 15 points and eight rebounds while Amber Soodsma added 14 points and Kate Du Mez 12 with Kara Karlsgodt narrowly missing double digits with nine. Schneidermann, Schmidt and Noelle Kreykes each had six points as the Defenders shot 31-66 from the floor for 47 percent while limiting their opponent to 12-57 shooting for 21.1 percent.
Dordt won the rebounding battle 48-33 and got 12 rebounds from Schmidt and eight each from De Nooy and Soodsma. Du Mez had six assists and four steals while Soodsma and De Nooy both had three steals. Schneidermann had five blocks for the Defenders who are now 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the league while Wesleyan slips to 4-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Wolves were led by Devan Aschtgen wtih nine points.
Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 16 at 6:00.
