(Storm Lake, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women’s basketball team lost a 67-63 decision at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa on Thursday, January 3 in non-conference action.
The Defenders scored the first six points of the game on a pair of Amber Soodsma baskets and a jump shot by Kate Du Mez. Buena Vista stormed back to tie the game with six straight points and Dordt took the lead back at 8-6 on McKinzie Schmidt basket with 13:29 left in the half. Buena Vista tied the game at 8-8 and proceeded to outscore Dordt 11-0 for a 17-8 lead with 10:50 remaining. The Beavers took a ten-point lead at 21-11 and had as much as a 15 point lead in the first half before Dordt trimmed the lead down to 42-31 at halftime.
Buena Vista threatened to blow the game open as they built their lead to 54-38 with 15:25 left in the game on a three pointer by Courtney Stoelk. The Defenders responded with a 10-2 run that was capped by a Kelsie De Nooy basket with 8:58 remaining.
Buena Vista held the charge off but the Defenders cut the lead down to 58-53 with a Noelle Kreykes basket with 7:31 left in the game. It was a five point difference again at 60-55 with 6:42 remaining on another Kreykes jumper but the couldn’t get closer than five until a pair of Kelsie De Nooy free throws made it 65-61 with :25 and the Beavers held on for the 67-63 final.
Dordt missed three free throws in a row when the difference was at six with over a minute left in the game.
Dordt was 26-70 from the floor for 37.1 percent while Buena Vista was 23-64 for 35.9 percent. Buena Vista converted five three-pointers while Dordt made one. Both teams had 19 turnovers and both teams had 47 rebounds. Buena Vista made 16-23 free throws while Dordt was good for 10-17 free throws.
McKinzie Schmidt came up with 15 points and grabbed 18 rebounds while Noelle Kreykes and Kate Du Mez both had ten points. Kelsie De Nooy scored nine and Kara Karlsgodt was good for nine rebounds and Du Mez had seven assists with five steals. Bre Schneidermann blocked three shots.
Buena Vista’s Margo Muhlbauer had 18 points and Jenn Schumann had 15 points and six rebounds.
Dordt is now 5-8 overall and saw a four game winning streak end while Buena Vista is 6-5. Dordt faces Mount Marty at 2:00 on Saturday, January 5 while Buena Vista has Luther on their schedule for this Saturday.
