Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dana

(Blair, Nebraska) After two close calls the Dordt College Defender women's basketball team earned their first Great Plains Athletic Conference win of the season with a 70-55 win on the road over the Dana Vikings on Saturday, December 15 at Blair, Nebraska.

The Defenders led start to finish, never relinquishing the lead on the way to their second win of the season while Dana fell to 4-9 with the loss.

Dordt jumped to a 6-2 lead on three straight baskets by McKinzie Schmidt and Dana tied the game at 10-10 with 14:47 remaining in the first half. Dordt pulled away to a 25-13 lead with 6:28 left in the half when Amber Soodsma knocked down a jumper. Schmidt had the hot hand early in the game, scoring 14 of the first 17 points for the Defenders.

Dana cut the lead to 25-20 with a 7-0 run but the Defenders had an answer with baskets by Kelsie De Nooy and Kara Karlsgodt and ballooned the lead to 33-21 on a free throw by Kate Du Mez with :14 left in the half. The point was the only one Du Mez had in the first half.

Dana made one charge at the Defenders in the second half, reducing the difference to 37-31 with 15:50 remaining when Jillian Bryant made a jump shot. Baskets by Soodsma, De Nooy and Noelle Kreykes ended the threat and the Defenders took a 43-31 lead and never had their lead cut down closer than 10, leading by as many as 23 before settling for the 70-55 final.

Dordt 25-63 from the floor for 39.7 percent and made the most of their free throw attempts wtih a 20-28 night. Dana was 18-64 for the game--28.1 percent and Dordt won the rebounding battle 49-37.

Schmidt led all players with 18 points on 8-14 shooting with seven rebounds while Kate Du Mez had 13 points and 10 rebounds--tops for the game for both teams. Amber Soodsma and Kelsie De Nooy each had ten points and Noelle Kreykes had eight points. Soodsma, Karlsgodt and Bre Schneidermann all had seven rebounds and Soodsm had four assists and Schneidermann three blocked shots.

Dana got 13 points from Amy Nichol.

Dordt is now 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the league while Dana is 4-9 and 0-5. Dordt travels to Washington for a pair of games on December 28 and 29 against Northwest College and Evergreen State.
