Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Valley City State (ND)

(Valley City, North Dakota) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team lost their game with Valley City State on Saturday night, November 3 in inconceivable fashion 85-83 in overtime. Valley City State converted three free throws with no time on the clock at the end of regulation to force the extra session.
Dordt led almost from the start in building a 40-36 halftime lead and bulged the lead up to 68-58 with under ten minutes left in the game. Foul trouble plagued the Defenders through out and Coach Stiemsma's squad was forced to go to some unconventional lineups after they lost Amber Soodsma to fouls late and McKinzie Schmidt and Bre Schneiderman were each saddled with four fouls near the midpoint of the second half.
Down 68-58 Valley City State slowed the Defender attack with a zone defense and eventually tied the game at 68. Dordt re took the lead and were up 72-70 on an Erin Savery free throw. Dordt very nearly put the game away when they were up 74-72 with :05 left. Amy Prather made one of two free throws to go up 75-72 but Valley City State grabbed the missed second attempt and Dordt committed a foul with no time on the clock on a three-point basket attempt and Amanda Brown drilled all three to send the game to overtime.
Dordt led briefly in the extra session 77-76 but the Vikings scored the next five points. A Kate Du Mez three-point shot cut the lead to 81-80 but the Defenders were forced to foul and Valley City State eventually built an 85-80 lead that would stand up as Du Mez made one more three pointer near the end of the overtime to make the final 85-83.
Dordt was 27-68 from the floor for 39.7 percent while Valley City State converted 23-61 field goals for 37.7. Dordt made 25-34 free throws and the hosts 31-41. Dordt held a 44-38 rebounding edge but turned the ball over 30 times.
Kate Du Mez led the Defenders with 20 points and also had 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks with one steal. Amber Soodsma scored 15 before fouling out and snagged six rebounds. McKinzie Schmidt and Amy Prather both had 11 points.
Valley City State's Mandy Johnson had a game high 24 points while Terra Billiet came through with 14 while grabbing ten rebounds.
Dordt is 0-2 whiel Valley City State improves to 2-1. Dordt will host Grand View on Wednesday in their next contest at 5:30.
