(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt started off the GPAC tournament on Tuesday night at home against Dana in women's play. The hard fought battle came down to the wire but the Defenders came out on top, 62-61. The game was a rematch of a regular season finale held on Saturday that Dana won by two and was also a rematch of a first round tournament game from last year that Dordt won.
The first half started off very even. Dordt took first blood but with 11:11 remaining, trailed 16-11. Dordt regained the lead at 20-18 and pulled out to a 28-24 lead at the half.
The shootout continued in the second half with a couple of lead changes that landed Dana in the lead, 43-40 with 10:03 left to play. Dordt fought back for the lead but could not hold it and trailed 60-55 with just 2:13 left. Dordt finished the game on a 7-1 run and regained the lead at 62-61 when Kara Karlsgodt made 2 free-throws. Dana had one last chance to win it but a block by Karlsgodt kept the ball out of the hoop and Dordt took the victory 62-61. Lindsey Van Wyk made her only three-pointer of the night in the final Dordt charge as well.
Dordt was led by Kara Karlsgodt who scored 17 while Kate Du Mez added 15 to the total. Lindsay Van Wyk also scored 14 and pulled down 8 boards. Dana only put one player into double figures with Tricia Trotter scoring 17. Dana shot 46 percent from the field but were only 50 percent at the line. Du Mez and Van Wyk both had four assists and Du Mez, Kelsie De Nooy and Erin Savery each had two steals.
The Defenders advance to the quarterfinal round of the GPAC tournament where they will face Mount Marty, the number two seed in the tournament on Thursday night in Yankton, South Dakota.
