(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Dordt College women's basketball team lost in a heartbreaker tonight at Dakota Wesleyan. The Defenders lost 69-66 in a hard fought battle from begining to end where neither had team had much of an advantage.
The first half was back and forth with neither team leading by more than 4 points. Dakota Weslyan took their biggest lead of the half at four with 5:22 left after a free throw by Kara Overweg. The game continued to stay close and Dakota Weslyan led by 2, 31-29 at the half when Kate Du Mez knocked down a lay-in with less than :05 left in the half.
Dordt started off the second half with a flurry, taking the lead from Dakota Wesleyan with five minutes gone at 35-33 on another Du Mez layup. Dordt continued to pull away and took a lead of 7 off a free throw from Kelsie De Nooy with 9:40 left in the game. Dakota Wesleyan cut the lead to three but Dordt had an answer, extending the lead to 58-50 with 5:45 left. From there things turned sour. Dordt was still up by five with 1:11 left but Wesleyan would take advantage of missed Dordt free throws and would cash in on their end and took their first lead since halftime Dakota Weslyan took the lead at 67-66 with 43 seconds on a three-pointer by Ashley Johnson. After two more made free throws the Defenders had a chance to tie, down 69-66 but a three-pointer with :04 left was off the mark.
Dordt was led by Kara Karlsgodt who had a double-double with 22 points and 18 rebounds--11 of which were offensive. Kate Du Mez also scored 13 while Kelsie De Nooy came in with 10. Dordt shot 24-73 from the field and was 75 percent at the line.
Dakota Wesleyan had four players in double digits with Kara Overweg leading the way with 16. Ashley Johnson also had 13, Adria Pazour had 11 points with 9 rebounds, and Laura Guericke scored 10 with 5 boards. They shot 25-56 from the field and missed only 2 of their 14 free-throws.
Dordt concludes the regular season on Saturday, February 17 starting at 1:00 PM against Dana.
