Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Graceland

(Lamoni, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team won a thrilling 109-103 double overtime game at Clossum Arena on the Graceland University campus Thursday night in non-conference action, lifting their record to 4-8 in the process.
The Defenders and Yellow Jackets traded blows in the first half with ties coming at 9, 11, 17, 19, 27 and 33 before Dordt took the lead on a jump shot by Kara Karlsgodt at the 6:47 mark of the first half. The Defenders proceeded to build as much as a ten point lead at 49-39 on a a pair of free throws by Kristin De Ronde with under a minute left in the half but an Ieshia Randall three pointer cut the lead to single digits going into halftime.
The teams refused to slacken the pace with Dordt again extending the lead to ten with 17:35 left in regulation on a basket by De Ronde. From there the Yellow Jackets shot there way back into the game, outscoring Dordt 18-8 to tie teh game at 64-64 with 12:15 remaining on another three-point shot by Randall. Dordt's Lindsey Van Wyk answered with a three pointer, one of three long range shots the senior would knock down on the night on the way to a career high 30 points.
The Yellow Jackets charged back again, taking their first lead since the early going with a Michelle McCrady layup with 9:16 left to make it 70-69. Dordt fought the charge off with a basket by Kate Du Mez and another basket by McKinzie Schmidt, one of nine mid-range jumpers the freshman from Gordon, Nebraska would convert.
Every time Dordt would threaten to take control the Yellow Jackets had an answer with the ninth tie of the game coming at 79-79. Dordt scored four in a row on back to back baskets by Lindsey Van Wyk to take an 85-81 lead only to have Graceland run off seven in a row for a seemingly safe 88-85 lead with 1:58 left in regulation. Schmidt answered this time for Dordt with a basket at the 1:47 mark and Lindsey Van Wyk made one of two free throws to tie it at 88-88 with 1:26 left. Both teams played the rest of regulation without scoring with Dordt's Kara Karlsgodt missig a pair of free throws with under :05 left to send it to overtime.
The first overtime was played close to the vest with Dordt getting a pair of Kate Du Mez free throws to tie it at 92-92 with :19 left. Graceland ran the clock down and Paris Williams got a runner off at the buzzer that hung on the front of the rim and fell off as the buzzer sounded.
In the second overtime the Defenders and Graceland were tied again at 93,95, 98 with Dordt finally taking the lead for good on a basket by Lindsey Van Wyk 2:47 left in regulation. Graceland was never closer than three the rest of the game as the Defenders improved to 4-8 for the season with the 109-103 victory.
Lindsey Van Wyk's 30 points were the most for a Defender women's player since 2002 and came on 13-18 shooting from the floor. Schmidt had 19 on 9-11 shooting--most of them midrange jumpers while Amy Prather converted for 14 and Kristin De Ronde had 13 points to go along with a game high 16 rebounds as Dordt pulled down 60 rebounds to Graceland's 41. Kate Du Mez added 11 points and eight assists while Kara Karlsgodt had 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals.
Dordt converted 43-87 shots and 18-26 free throws including 10-14 free throws in the two overtimes.
Graceland was led by the guard tandem of Michelle McCrady and Ieshia Randall with 19 points each. The quicksilver Randall also had 12 assists and two steals in 42 minutes of action. Graceland made 36-86 shots and had 15 turnovers to Dordt's 20.
The 109 points is the most ever scored by a Defender women's basketball team and the 212 combined points are the most scored by two teams in a Dordt College women's game.
Graceland slips to 8-3 for the season. Dordt College will take a 4-8 record into their next game against the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday, December 21 in a game at Bellevue University at 5:30.
