Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team rebounded from a disappointing loss to Buena Vista on Wednesday night with a 64-51 conference win over the Briar Cliff Chargers on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.
The Defenders led most of the first half, extending a eight point lead on a basket by Kelsie De Nooy with 6:16 remaining in the half that made it 23-15. The Defenders allowed a run by Briar Cliff that flipped the score around as Briar Cliff rattled off 13 of the next 14 points. Trailing 28-24 with 2:04 left in the half the Defenders got a three-point shot from Erin Savery and Amy Prather nailed a three wtih :50 left to re-establish a Dordt College lead and the Defenders went into the half up 32-30.
Briar Cliff got a three-pointer by Katie McCarthy to take a brief lead. The Defender got the lead back on a McKinzie Schmidt jumper and never trailed again. Briar Cliff did tie it at 35 but Dordt went on a 6-0 run and built the lead to ten on a basket by Lindsey Van Wyk and the Chargers never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
The Defenders were topped by McKinzie Schmidt's 13 points and Kelsie De Nooy's 11 while Lindsey Van Wyk added nine with five rebounds. Kara Karlsgodt managed seven points, seven rebounds and four assists and Amy Prather had nine points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Dordt, after committing 16 turnovers in the first half, gave the ball up just six times in the second half while limiting the Chargers to 21 second half points.
Briar Cliff was paced by Kayla Boyd with 14 and Katie McCarthy with 11 and Mel Shidell had 13 rebounds to lead Briar Cliff to a 40-34 rebounding edge.
Dordt made 25-52 shots from the floor for 48.1 percent while Briar Cliff made 18-59 for 30.5 percent in the game. Briar Cliff was just 6-26 in the second half for 23.1 percent.
Dordt is now 3-2 in the league and 3-8 overall while Briar Cliff slips to 2-4 and 4-9.
This marks the second year in a row Dordt has swept Briar Cliff in regular season basketball. The Defenders will face Graceland in Lamoni, Iowa on Thursday, December 14 at 5:30 and the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska on December 21 to complete the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule.
