November 18, 2006
(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College women are in the top half of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, starting the conference schedule with a win for the first time in the seven year existence of the league after a 60-53 win on the road over Briar Cliff. The game was the season opener for both teams. Briar Cliff dropped to 1-4 overall, and the Defenders are now 1-5.
The Defenders broke away from a 7-7 tie with an eight point run and then went on another eight point run after four points by Briar Cliff to extend the lead to 23-11 on a basket by Erin Savery with 5:38 remaining in the first half. Briar Cliff managed to get back within striking distance at halftime by cutting the lead to 27-17 at halftime.
Briar Cliff went on an 11-0 run early in the second half to cut a 32-19 lead down to 32-30 with 14:08 remaining. The Defenders responded with three free throws by Lindsey Van Wyk and a three-pointer by Van Wyk to re-establish an eight point lead. Again, the Chargers came back, trimming the lead to two again at 47-45 on a basket by Molly Frank with 4:44 left. Baskets by Kristin De Ronde and free throws by Van Wyk and Kate DuMez pushed the lead to 10 and the Defenders took their fourth win in a row over the Chargers by the final seven point margin.
Dordt outrebounded the Chargers 45-39 with help from a returning 6'2" post in Kristin De Ronde. De Ronde and Lindsey Van Wyk joined the team for the first time this season coming off of volleyball. De Ronde and Van Wyk led the team with 9 rebounds and 19 points respectively. Guards Erin Savery and Kate Du Mez controlled the ball well for the Defenders, helping lead the break against Briar Cliff's 2-2-1 press. Savery and Du Mez each had five boards on the night.
Fresh legs worked to Dordt's advantage, getting quality minutes out of 9 players, while only 6 Briar Cliff players saw the floor for more than 10 minutes.
Dordt will take a 1-0 conference record into their game on Tuesday when the Defenders will battle an undefeated Red Raider team that won a pair of tight contests this week over Dakota State and Mount Marty. The game Tuesday is in Orange City.
