(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College women hosted Jamestown College in their season opener Friday night, losing to the Jimmies 65-53. Both teams came in with little experience, as rosters were stocked with several sophomore and freshman players. Jamestown recorded their second win on the season having played their first game of the season in Canada.
Dordt put up the first two points of the ball game with a jumper by Kara Karlsgodt right off the tip. The Defenders scored only five points in the opening 7 minutes, allowing Jamestown to jump to a 19-5 lead. Good defense for Dordt sparked a 8-0 run, starting a comeback that ended the half 29-25 in the Jimmie's favor.
The Defenders battled from the beginning of the second half, getting within two with a jumper by Amy Prather in the opening possesion. Dordt was only able to break down the lead and tie it at 38-38 with 13:17 left on an Erin Savery three-point basket. Tenacious defense led to late Defender turnovers, opening the door for Jamestown to seal the win. Forced to foul in the closing minutes, the Defenders put Jamestown on the line 13 times. The Jimmies connected on 9 of their total shots from the foul line in the second half.
Giuli Varriano led all scorers with her 20 points, scoring off the drive and from the free throw line most of the night. The Defenders had three scorers in double digits: Amanda Henke (14), Erin Savery (13), and Kara Karlsgodt (11). Rebounds for the Defenders were controlled by Karlsgodt with 8 on the night. Jamestown held a 48-33 rebounding advantage with 14 offensive rebounds in the first half.
