Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Dana-GPAC First Round

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Lady Defenders scored the first six points of the second half and ran away from the Dana Lady Vikings in the first round of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday night at the De Witt Gym. The Lady Defenders avenged a loss from earlier this season in the process and posted their 15th win of the season, matching their second most wins in a season for since 1992.

The Lady Defenders threatened to run away early when they took an eight point lead at 22-14 with 8:10 remaining in the first half, capping a six point run on a jum shot by Lindsey Van Wyk. All of the points in the run were by Van Wyk. Dana answered back with six in a row to cut the lead and eventually trailed 23-22 and 25-24. The Lady Defenders pushed the lead back to six on a pair of Rachel Van Beek free throws to make it 32-26 at half.

Dordt scored teh first six points of the second half and Dana could only muster a pair of mini-runs to get back within eight points at 41-33 with 15:27 remaining in the game.

Forcing turnovers, the Lady Defenders ran the difference up to 55-37 with a Shawna Flikkema jumper off an assist by Kathryn Ferrie with 12:37 left and the Lady Defenders cruised to the win.

Jill Haan led a balanced Dordt attack wtih 13 points, making 6-10 shots from the floor. Lindsey Van Wyk had 11 and Tara De Boer came off the bench for 10. Rachel Van Beek narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds with three blocks and three steals. Kathryn Ferrie was solid with nine points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and six steals as Dana committed 27 turnovers. Nicki De Blaey had eight points and three assists as the Lady Defenders made 30-70 shots from the floor. Dordt managed a 45-27 advantage on the glass.

Dana was led by Amy Nichol with 17 points while Nicole Hull and Allie Lamb had eight points a piece.
