(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Lady Defenders earned their eighth win of the conference season and moved above .500 overall with a 90-69 drubbing of Dakota Wesleyan, avenging a loss at the Corn Palace from earlier this season.
The Lady Defenders took an 11 point lead half way through the first half on a Kathryn Ferrie interior move with 9:59 remaining in the half to make it 22-11. The Lady Defenders were not able to hold the double digit lead as Wesleyan cut it down to three points at 36-33 on a Kelly Haiar jump shot wtih 1:40 left in the half. The Lady Defenders responded with a four point run to close the half on a driving basket by Nicki De Blaey and a jump shot by Jill Haan with :08 left in the half to send it to the locker room 40-33.
The Lady Defenders quickly built the lead to double figures in teh second half, scoring the first four points of the hal and continued the onslaught, holding Wesleyan to five points over the first 8:15 of the second half. By the time Wesleyan got on track offensively they were down by 24 and were never able to make a serious run at the Lady Defenders.
Dordt was led by Jill Haan's 19 points while Nicki De Blaey made 6-9 shots, a mixture of mid-range jumpers and driving lay-ups, for 15 points. Tara De Boer added 13 and Kathryn Ferrie was good for 10. Lindsey Van Wyk and Rachel Van Beek had nine and eight respectively as Dordt had their highest point output of the season. The Lady Defenders made 34-62 shots for 55 percent.
Wesleyan was paced by Kelly Haiar with 21 while Stacy Schultz added 10.
The Lady Defenders owned a 37-30 advantage on the glass with Jill Haan snaring eight and Rachel Van Beek five. Haan also had four assists and three steals.
The win locks up a top-eight finish in the conference regular season race for the Lady Defenders with one game remaining and assures the Lady Defenders of a home game on Tuesday, February 21 in the first round of the GPAC post-season tournament.
