(Sioux Falls, South Dakota) The Dordt College Lady Defender basketball team snapped a five-game losing skid with an 81-76 win over the University of Sioux Falls Cougars in women's basketball play at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls.
The Lady Defenders took the lead for good on a basket by Lindsey Van Wyk with 13:11 left in the first half to make it 11-10. The basket ignited a 10-0 run that was capped when Kathryn Ferrie nailed a jumper with 9:36 remaining in the half.
Dordt took a 35-26 lead into the halftime break and promptly pushed the lead to double figures in the second half on a three-pointer by Shawna Flikkema. The senior from Manhattan, Montana would drop in five three-pointers before the night was over, for a team high 17 points.
The Lady Defenders pushed the lead to 17 at 79-62 with 4:24 before Sioux Falls mounted a furious comeback. Using a 12-0 run the Lady Cougars got to within 79-74 with :32 remaining before Flikkema iced the game wtih a pair of free throws, making it a three-possession ballgame.
Dordt's seventh win in the conference came with three players hitting double figures. Flikkema was 5-10 from behind the arc for her 17 while Kristin De Ronde put in 15 points on 7-9 shooting from the floor. Lindsey Van Wyk added 13 while going 6-10 from the floor. The Lady Defenders made 47 percent of their shots in the game including 17-28 in the second half for 61 percent. Jill Haan had seven rebounds to lead the Lady Defenders to a 41-31 advantage and Tara De Boer and Nicki De Blaey added eight points and Kathryn Ferrie knocked down nine points. Rachel Van Beek, Van Wyk and De Ronde all had 5 rebounds.
Sioux Falls was paced by Jenna Kraayenbrink with 28 points on 10-14 shooting and Morgan Campbell added 16. Kristen Klaassen, Sioux Falls' second leading scorer was limited to just two shots and Chelsey Nelson, the Cougars' all-time leading three-point shooter, got just two made baskets on four attempts.
The win is Dordt's 12th of the year and matches last season's total. The Lady Defenders are tied for 7th in the conference with Dakota Wesleyan.
